Nature Programs Embodying SDGs

NHK Enterprises’ Natural History Programs Department is responsible for producing nearly all of NHK’s nature programs, including renowned series such as Wildlife and Darwin’s Amazing Animals .

Utilizing state-of-the-art filming equipment, including high-speed and high-sensitivity cameras, we capture extraordinary moments such as the elusive giant squid in the deep sea as well as the record-breaking flight of flying fish, which is listed in the Guinness World Records, obtaining never-before-seen footage. Our dedication is to deliver exclusive content showcasing the true essence of wildlife, marvels of the natural world, and in-depth explorations of changing ecosystems. We have also partnered with international broadcasters and production companies, such as BBC and ZDFS, to secure groundbreaking footage that has enthralled global audiences.

Producing a nature documentary often requires more than a month of filming. To minimize traveling, which is one of the major causes of CO₂ emissions in content production, the entire team – including directors and cinematographers – stays at an accommodation near the filming location. We also use portable solar panels, where possible, to charge camera and lighting equipment, ensuring self-sufficiency. These measures help us to reduce the CO₂ emissions generated during the production, reflecting our commitment to environmentally-responsible filmmaking.
